It took several years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had it with her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking. Stated another way, the physician told Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior. The physician also stressed the fact that Sarah would not be able to control Keith's behavior. With the support and encouragement of the treatment team at the healthcare clinic, nonetheless, she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Keith's excessive and abusive drinking but she would also be able to learn how to help him make an appointment at the rehabilitation clinic so that he could discuss his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior with a physician.

The good news was that after Sarah explained this to Keith and he saw that she meant business, he told her that he had been quite uneasy with his abusive drinking behavior and that he was somewhat comforted to realize that Sarah wanted to do something helpful about his excessive and abusive drinking behavior. Consequently, he scheduled an appointment to see a psychologist at the local alcohol rehabilitation clinic.

While simply calling a treatment program does not mean that a person's excessive and abusive drinking behavior will become less problematic or that an individual will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, calling for an appointment is certainly a necessary component in the rehabilitation process.
