The Alcohol Related Deaths And Alcohol Related Problems That Are Associated With Irresponsible And Hazardous Drinking And What Can Be Done About Alcohol Addiction And Alcohol Abuse In Our Country

How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? How many people's lives are cut short due to excessive and abusive drinking? How many people get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many people are the victims of alcohol related crime or violence each and every year? How many people face serious consequences in their lives because they received a DUI conviction? How many people die each year from a condition that is totally preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they need?

So what is the main reason for asking these questions? Primarily to point out the destructive and devastating nature of careless drinking. In fact, and based on the questions articulated above, it's a wonder why anyone would choose to drink in an abusive and irresponsible manner.

Stated a different way, with the host of employment dilemmas, legal proceedings, relationship problems, health difficulties, and financial issues that are interrelated with alcohol dependency and chronic alcohol abuse, why would any person with a good sense of logic want to drink in an abusive manner? In fact when some of the above topics are examined more closely, unhealthy and abusive drinking becomes more illogical and makes even less sense.

Wouldn't you think that heavy drinkers would be able to see some of the alcoholism symptoms that they manifest? In a similar way, doesn't it seem reasonable to think that more heavy drinkers would be able to perceive some of the alcoholism signs that they manifest? Not only this but wouldn't you think that individuals who are addicted to alcohol would try to learn more about their alcoholic symptoms by researching various alcohol related statistics, facts, and information?

After reviewing the alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse research findings, the point is so critical that it needs to be repeated: With all of the damaging and debilitating outcomes that are directly or indirectly associated with repetitive and continuous alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, why would any person want to engage in excessive and abusive drinking?

What can be done about the widespread nature of alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse in the United States? First, society needs to get the message to more people about the damaging and destructive outcomes of hazardous and excessive drinking. Second, people who are alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent need to look look at themselves frankly and ask why they are not getting the professional alcohol rehabilitation they need.

Third, our students need more meaningful and more relevant educational and preventative methods and approaches so that more students at all grade levels, including those at college, are "reached". And fourth, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than getting easily drawn to the "instant gratification" and the "quick fix" of a drug or alcohol abuse "buzz" or "high".

There's lots of room for hope and optimism if individuals can start drinking in moderation and those who engage in hazardous drinking can become motivated to get the alcohol treatment they require. Indeed, why put your loved ones through pain, turmoil, and suffering because of your abusive drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking responsibly or even abstaining from drinking if you can't control your drinking?
