When I was just a lad I can fondly recall sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and observing my dad receiving a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is these days. There was an art to it. The barber really appreciated what he was doing and it was obvious that my father enjoyed it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where gentlemen could socialize with themselves.

The haircuts were always so detailed. My pop would be sitting in one of the many used barber chairs as the barber would deliberately take his time to give the flawless cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the manner back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we visualize today, with foam from a can and a plastic disposable razor. Rather, the lather was applied with a brush and a straight blade razor was used. It appears frightening, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever be given. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so enjoyable.

The men would mostly argue about football or politics, though the matter of women would come up often. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a little better. Today, when you get a haircut the chatter is kept to a minimum and you often attempt to get out as soon as you can.

As I stroll by the local barber shop and observe the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I speculate why this custom has mostly disappeared from our traditions. Do people not appreciate a proper hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an some time socializing with our pals and neighbors seems like a chore? While I am not one to be angry and only desire for "how things were", I do wish that humanity will keep in mind and value the way it was just a few decades ago.
